Bailey Wormington's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning brought home Tiffany Carver with the winning run as the Monett Lady Cubs rallied to defeat the Republic Tigers, 7-6, in a softball game on Monday at Monett North Park.
Monett improved its season record to 5-1.
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls," said Monett Head Coach Ty Goetz.
"Most teams would have been done after getting down four runs to a good team like Republic," Goetz continued, "but we continued to battle. We hit the ball hard against one of the best pitchers in the area."
The Lady Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. EmiLee Davis reached base on a one-out fielder's choice and came around to score on a RBI single by Wormington.
Republic tied the game in the third and then took a 5-1 lead in the fifth with four runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Monett narrowed the score to 5-3 thanks to Tiger errors. Carver reached first base on an error and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Davis. Carver scored on a fielder's choice by Wormington, who then stole second and reached third on a fielder's choice. Wormington scored on a throwing error by the Republic catcher.
Monett tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the contest into extra innings. Raigan Ratliff tripled and scored on a triple by Carver. Davis followed with the game-tying single.
Republic took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth but the Lady Cubs came back to win the game. Ratliff doubled and scored on a double by Carver to tie the game again. Carver then stole third and scored the winning run on Wormington's base hit.
Paige Marney was the winning pitcher. She allowed 10 hits and struck out four in going the distance.
Monett will play next at Cassville on Thursday.
