One Hundred Mile Yard Sale set for Saturday

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Shoppers will have 100 miles to explore to find bargains this Saturday, Aug. 29, and Monett and Pierce City will be right in the middle of the prime shopping opportunity.

For the first time, Monett and Pierce City have been invited to participate in the annual 100-mile garage sale that stretches from Ash Grove to Branson West.

According to Suzy McElmurry, executive director of the Monett Chamber of Commerce, over 100 signs have been given out to are residents who plan to hold yard sales during the event, which will run from dusk to dawn.

In Monett, the yard sale route will run along Highway 37 from North Park to Broadway, then run east along Broadway to the Centennial Overpass, south on Kyler to Highway 60, then east toward Aurora.

McElmurry said a number of downtown merchants plan to have products out in a sidewalk sale for the day. Some participants have made arrangements to set up sales in various places along the route, such as the parking lot of the First United Methodist Church and other business parking lots. The city will be allowing use of properties along Broadway, such as the lot between the museum and the American Legion home, for use if appropriate requests have been filed.

"Monett is right in the middle (of the 100-mile route) so we may be very popular," said McElmurry. "Monett is the logical place to stop and eat and shop."

The Missouri Department of Transportation has agreed to allow parking along the yard sale route for the day. No yard sale permits will be needed for sellers on the official route.

City Clerk Julie Johnson in Pierce City said she has received numerous calls for people interested in participating. Pierce City's section of the 100-mile route extends along Highway 97. Sellers will be setting up on some of the vacant lots along Commercial Street.

Johnson will be posting a sign at the corner of Elm and Commercial, where Highways 97 and 37 meet, indicating more sales can be found west of the intersection. Pierce City is not issuing signs for the sale, Johnson said.

Additional information about the 100-mile garage sale is available by contacting the Monett Chamber of Commerce office at 235-7919. A map of the entire 100-mile route can be accessed at www.monett-mo.com.

"This is just another little thing we an do to promote Monett," McElmurry said.
