Lady Cubs Edge Ash Grove In Softball Opener, 2-1

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Getting strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting, the Monett Lady Cubs nipped Ash Grove, 2-1, yesterday in the season opening softball game at Monett North Park.

"I thought we played well for the first game," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz.

"Defensively we looked sharp for the majority of the game," Goetz added. "We had some girls step up on offense with some big hits in their first varsity game."

It was defense that kept Ash Grove off the board in the top of the first inning. With a runner on second and one out, an Ash Grove batter singled to center. The runner on second tried to score, but center fielder Tiffany Carver cut her down at the plate with perfect strike to catcher EmiLee Davis.

Monett got on the board in he bottom of the first. Raigan Ratliff led off with a single. Carver and Davis singled to load the bases. With one out Bailey Wormington singled to score Carver.

The Lady Cubs made it 2-0 in the fourth. Avery Bounous banged out a one-out double, and Anna Arnaud followed with a RBI single

Ash Grove scored an unearned run in the sixth.

Paige Marney went the distance on the mound for Monett to get the victory, allowing no earned runs and four hits. She struck out six.

In the junior varsity game, Monett scored five runs in the fifth inning to come from behind and win, 9-8. Ratliff had three hits for the JV Lady Cubs and was the winning hurler. Josee Krueger also had three hits.

Monett will play Crane on the road Friday in another non-conference contest.
