August 24, 1939

* Coach Ray Moss arrived in Monett today from Columbia where he had been attending the University of Missouri this summer.

* Mrs. Ralph Reasor, northwest of Monett, met Evelyn Worley of Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, at her home here for the first time Tuesday though the two women have been corresponding for 12 years.


August 24, 1949

* Alice Meador, Monett High School home economics teacher, was elected treasurer of the Missouri Home Economics Association in Columbia over the weekend.

* Wilma Rittenhouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.O. Rittenhouse of Monett, won second place and a loving cup in the Frisco system's beauty contest in St. Louis on Sunday.


August 24, 1959

* Bethel school district contracted yesterday to send its elementary pupils to Monett public schools, according to Monett Superintendent of Schools E.E. Camp.

* Spencer Smith, Albert Avondet and Norbert Obermann, employees of the Monett Post Office, have received Safe Driving Awards from the National Safety Council.


August 24, 1969

* Dr. Joe Kuklenski Jr., a native of Pierce City, has been named superintendent of schools in the Springfield public school system.

* Rev. Karl Peterson of Cherokee, Iowa, has accepted the pastorate of the First Christian Church of Purdy.


August 24, 1979

* Tentative approval for providing a proposed site for the new State School for Severely Handicapped to be constructed in Monett was approved at last night's meeting of the Monett R-1 Board of Education.

* Monettans and other area residents participated in a disaster drill yesterday morning to test existing disaster plans in case of a tornado striking Monett's Industrial tract.

* Janet Ross, a Monett native, has won the top honors in the Professional Fine Arts Division of the 1989 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.

* Swearing-in ceremonies for Scott Sifferman as associate judge of Lawrence County Circuit Court will be held August 28 in Mt. Vernon.

* Verona Tillers 'n Toilers Garden Club's 34th annual open flower, foliage and garden show has been set for Saturday at the Lions Club Building in Verona.

* An up-beat audit report painted a positive picture for the City of Pierce City financially, as presented at the city council's August monthly meeting.


August 25, 1919

* W.H. Pennel, of the Gunter neighborhood, has bought the Jeffries store in Butterfield. Cas Jeffries, who managed the store, will now be the cashier of the new Farmers Bank of Butterfield.

* Claude Wollsey, of Monett, who has been working as government agriculture agent in Virginia, has accepted a position at the University of Arkansas in the agriculture department.


August 25, 1929

* Mrs. W.A. Gilbert, of Monett, returned home Wednesday from a visit in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

* A flutter of manly breasts on the Monett streets Friday was occasioned by the appearance of the first pajama girls in this town.


August 25, 1949

* William O. Kirk, of Monett, ranked high with his stamp exhibits in the Philatelic Awards announced at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.

* Lynn Stoddard, of Parsons, Kansas, has arrived in Monett for a short visit with friends.


August 25, 1959

* Paul Camp, son of Monett Superintendent of Schools and Mrs. E.E. Camp, has left for pre-school football practice at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield.

* B.C. Bundy, music instructor at Monett High School, has returned from a meeting of band directors in the state held in Kansas City.


August 25, 1979

* Monett Municipal Swimming Pool will close for the summer on Sunday after a record season, according to Mrs. Emma Enke, pool manager.

* Delegates from Hobbs-Anderson Post 91 Monett American Legion to Cadet Patrol and Boys State, reported on their activities at last night's meeting of the Post.


August 25, 1989

* Earl Telschow, a teacher at Trinity Lutheran School in Freistatt, attended the annual Lutheran educational leader's conference in Jefferson City last week.

* John Lane has been appointed by the Monett City Council to serve on the city's Board of Adjustments.


August 25, 1999

* For the first time in at least several decades, perhaps the first time in history, the Monett Cubs football team has an entirely new coaching staff headed by Coach Keith Jordan.

* De De Hutson, appointed as the new North Ward alderman to succeed her husband, Willis, who resigned last month, attended her first Verona City Council meeting last night.
