Monett native wins top sports columnist award

Monday, July 20, 2009

Monett native John McGee has been named the top sports columnist in the state of Arkansas by the Arkansas Press Association at their annual convention recently.

A 1971 graduate of Monett High School, McGee won the honor in competition with other weekly newspapers in the state. In addition to that award, McGee also earned second place honors as a sports news writer, second place as a sports feature writer and also a third place award for freelance news writing.
McGee writes part-time for the Northeast Benton County Times of Pea Ridge. He also serves as the Pea Ridge School District's elementary art teacher, a position he has held there for 12 years. Named the Pea Ridge Teacher of the Year in 2004, McGee recently had the honor of having his art students put on an exhibition at the Gilcrease Museum of American Art in Tulsa, Okla. Featuring 50 works of art by his students, the exhibit was shown for a month this summer at the Gilcrease.
The son of Wanda McGee of Monett and the late John J. McGee, McGee lives in Bella Vista, Ark., with his wife, Debbie.
