On Saturday, Aug 29, the Monett Chamber of Commerce will join eight other area chambers in hosting a 100-mile yard sale. The yard sales will stretch from Ash Grove to Branson West along a 100-mile-long route.
Monett's portion of the route will extend along Highway 37 from east of Pierce City to Central to Broadway to Kyler to Highway 60 and out to Aurora.
Area residents, businesses and indivduals are invited to set up sales along the route. The sale will be promoted in the southwest Missouri area, and hundreds of shoppers are expected to come out on that day looking for bargains.
Those wishing to participate do not need to sign up, but 100-mile yard sale signs are available for free from the Monett Chamber. On that day, the Missouri Department of Transportation is giving those participating in the sale permission to set up anywhere along the route.
The yard sale has been held for the past three years, but this is the first time Monett and Pierce City have been invited to participate, said Suzy McElmurry, executive director of the Monett Chamber.
"They were expanding the scope of the sale, and we were invited to participate," said McElmurry.
The local chamber's involvement in the event will include promoting it, marking the sale route through Monett and providing free yard sale signs to participants.
"This is just another little thing we can do to promote Monett," McElmurry said.
The event also gives individuals a chance to put a little extra money in their pockets and civic organizations an opportunity to fundraise.
"Clubs and organizations can set up booths and make money for their organizations," added McElmurry. "Merchants can also participate or just put up signs or banners welcoming visitors to town. People might see something and think 'I didn't know that was in Monett' and come back and shop."
Other chambers who are promoting the 100-mile yard sale include: Ash Grove, Everton, Greenfield, Miller, Mt. Vernon, Pierce City, Aurora, Marionville, Crane, Galena and Reeds Spring.
Mt. Vernon and Aurora chamber officials reported that the sale is very popular and brought a lot of people into their towns.
"Monett is right in the middle (of the 100-mile route) so we may be very popular," said McElmurry. "Monett is the logical place to stop and eat and shop."
The 100-mile yard sale will take place from sunrise to sunset on Aug. 29. For more information, visit the chamber's website at www.monett-mo.com. A complete map of the yard sale route will be posted on the site.
