Troy Filmore Askins, age 67, Pierce City, Mo., passed away at 5 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Freeman West Hospital, following an illness.
|Troy was born on September 20, 1941 in DeWitt, Ark., the son of the late John and Lucy (Crady) Askins. As a young man Troy entered the United States Navy. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and he served his country for over twenty-eight years, retiring in 1991.||He was awarded the following medals and awards: Navy Unit Commendation (2nd Award), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy "E" Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award), Navy Expeditionary Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2nd Award), Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2nd Award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Expert Pistol Shot Medal. He was a former member of the Diamond Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW Post 4142 in Neosho, Missouri. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.|
He is survived by three sisters, Lola Ione Hickman, Bald Knob, Ark., Ivy Lovelle Askins Mooney, Little Rock, Ark., and Faye Hendy, Odessa, Tx.; five brothers, Jackie Lee Askins, Biscoe, Ark., Alvie Melburn Askins, Morrilton, Ark., William Arnold Askins, Little Rock, Ark., Richard Dale Askins, Little Rock, Ark., and Clay Askins, Biscoe, Ark.; twenty-nine nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Troy Filmore Askins Jr., and two sisters, Joyce Geneva Pennington, and Melba Jewell Askins.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel. Reverend Ron Crow will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the North Little Rock Arkansas Veterans Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
