Joplin scored late and often Sunday to defeat the Monett American Legion team, 9-7, in a baseball game at Joplin.

"We started great and then gave up six runs in one inning," said Monett Manager Blaine Trout.

Monett took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Pokey Henderson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Henderson scored on a single by Andy Hagedorn. Jake Smith had an RBI single, and Jared Barchak capped the scoring with a two-RBI single.

In the third, Joplin got a run to make the score 6-3 and then erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Monett closed the scoring with a run in the sixth. Marcus McCaffrey singled, advanced to third on a couple of errors and scored on a passed ball.

"We had a bad fifth inning again," Trout said. "It's happened all year long."
