A serious accident was narrowly averted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Fifth Street and Broadway.

Bicyclist Jeremy Hammon was headed east on the city sidewalk, and when he came to cross Fifth Street, he encountered a city fire truck, heading out to pick up supplies from the day's hydrant painting.

Hammons' bike had no brakes. He ran into the side of the fire truck and slid under it. Captain Dwayne Irwin caught just a glimpse of Hammons in the fire truck mirror and quickly hit the brakes before the truck ran over the bicyclist.

The quick response proved good enough. Hammons, seated on the sidewalk at left, declined treatment by the Barry-Lawrence Ambulance crew who arrived on the scene.

Officer Bryan Brown wrote a report while firemen directed traffic at the scene.
