The Monett Police Department recently completed an extensive seat belt compliance effort aimed at encouraging drivers to buckle up.

The effort was conducted from May 18 through May 31 as part of the national Click It or Ticket mobilization.

During the enforcement effort, Monett officers issued a total of 40 tickets and warnings. The following citations were handed out to area motorists: 11 safety belt and child restraint violation tickets; 20 speed warnings or tickets; one driving while intoxicated arrest; and 18 warnings or tickets for other traffic violations.

During the enforcement effort, officers also arrested one fugitive during one routine seat belt traffic stop.

"Safety belts are your single best defense in a crash," said Monett Police Sergeant Jerry Harrison. "The Monett Police Department continues to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice and buckle up to arrive alive."

Funding for the Click It or Ticket It effort was provided through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Division in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration and the Missouri Safety Center.
