No entries from Monett earned medals last weekend at the Class 3A state track meet in Jefferson City despite competing well. Two athletes from Mt. Vernon did win medals by placing in the top eight, and several other area thinclads had good performances.
The Monett boys' 4x200-meter relay team of Tristen Homfeldt, D.J. Dunmire, Steven Noriega and Chris Eimer placed 15th with a time of 1:36.07.
"In the preliminary race Friday they tried very hard but were slowed by a mild injury and did not qualify for the finals on Saturday," said Monett Boys Coach Jerry Hudson.
Substitutes for the relay team making the trip to Jefferson were Scotty Wilson and Mauricio Trujillo.
Competing for the Lady Cubs at state was Leah Fellwock in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. She finished 13th with a time of 49.22.
On Saturday, Corey Phillips, of the Mt. Vernon boys, placed fifth in the triple jump, soaring 45'7.5" to earn an All-State medal. Kenzie Williams also snagged a medal for the Mountaineers, placing eighth in the girls' long jump with a 17' leap.
Cassville's Mathew Angel and Seth Thompson both recorded 10th place finishes on Friday, May 29, the first day of the track meet.
Angel cleared 6' 2" for 10th in the high jump, and Thompson threw the shot 47'11.5 inches for his 10th position. They were the highest placing area boys on Friday.
Mt. Vernon's Zack Kleine placed 12th in the 100-meter dash preliminariess in 11.32. Teammate Phillips was 13th in the long jump and 15th in the high jump.
Cassville placed 14th in the boys' 4x100-meter relay preliminaries. The team of Brent Elkins, Joseph Gouvion, Josh Lewright and Trevor Shumaker recorded a time of 44.58.
Lindsey Bragg, of East Newton, was the top finisher of area girls on Friday. She took 12th in the triple jump with a leap of 33'7.5". Mt. Vernon's Hayley Brown was 14th in the 100-meter prelims with a time of 12.88.
Aurora and East Newton placed 14th and 15th respectively in the 4x800-meter relay. For Aurora, Allison Petit, Bethany Decker, Kenzie Lauffer and Ashlyn Hilton ran 10:20.31. East Newton's Kara Harris, Courtney Mann, Haley Patterson and Kristina Peterson clocked 10:24.01.
Cassville's Dylan Gibson finished 13th in the boys discus, throwing the plate 139'6".
