Double your pleasure, double your fun. That seemed to be the mantra of the Monett Cubs yesterday as the visiting Cubs banged out eight doubles in a 22-3 Big 8 Conference baseball win over East Newton.
Monett ended league play with a 5-2 record, good enough for second place behind Cassville. The Cubs are now 12-5 on the season.
Eight runs in the top of the first inning would prove to be more than enough for Monett. Spenser Witt started the double parade with a lead-off two-base hit. Michael Roberts and Kellen Bounous followed with RBI doubles. Kirk Moore and Marcus Enloe had RBI singles. Witt, batting for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Roberts then drove in three runs with his second double of the inning.
In the second inning, the Cubs tacked on three more runs. Jake Smith drove in a run with a single and Kyle Coatney plated two runs with a single.
Monett made the score 12-0 in the third on an RBI double by Smith.
The Cubs erupted for 10 runs in the fourth. Roberts had two RBI doubles in an inning for the second time in the game. Bounous drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Colton Phillips and Enloe each plated two runs with a single. Moore had an RBI double and another run scored on an error.
East Newton scored a run in the second and two in the fifth.
Jesse Bremer was the winning pitcher.
Monett also won the B-game, 9-2. Doug Aldridge was the winning hurler.
The Cubs are scheduled to play Bolivar in a first round Class 3A District 11 game at Springfield Catholic at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
