Republic scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 12th inning last night to hand the Monett Cubs a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat in the baseball tournament at Republic.
Monett saw its record go to 11 wins against five losses.
Coach Michael Calhoun of the Cubs said, "The kids kept battling a very good team and left everything on the field. I am excited by he effort and enthusiasm they showed no matter what the situation was."
In the top of the first inning, the Cubs took a 1-0 lead. Michael Roberts walked, stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw. Roberts scored on a groundout by Kellen Bounous.
After Republic tied he game in the bottom half, the Cubs went up 2-1 in the second. Preston Thompson was hit by a pitch and Kyle Meyer courtesy ran for him. Jake Smith bunted to move Meyer to second. Meyer scored on a bad pick-off try.
Republic came back with two runs in the fourth for a 3-2 lead but the Cubs tied the game in the sixth with two outs. Thompson singled and Meyer ran for him. Meyer stole second and scored on an RBI single by Smith.
The game remained scoreless until with 11th when the Cubs took a 4-3 lead. Thompson singled and went to third on a single by Smith. A single by Colten Phillips scored Thompson. Republic tied the game in the bottom of the 11th and then won it in the 12th.
Marcus McCaffrey was the losing pitcher.
Monett will play in the tourney again today versus Joplin at 5 p.m.
