Exploding late in the ball game, the Monett Cubs pounded the Seneca Indians, 16-2, yesterday in a Big 8 Conference baseball game at Senecas.
Monett went to 11-4 on the season and 4-2 in the league.
The Cubs grabbed an early lead and put the game away late. In the second inning, Monett took a 1-0 lead when Preston Thompson singled, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on an RBI single by Colten Phillips.
Monett made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Jesse Bremer scored from third on a wild throw on a pick-off attempt and Jake Smith scored on a passed ball.
In the fifth, the Cubs went up 4-0 when Kirk Moore crossed the plate on another passed ball.
The Cubs then scored six runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Marcus Enloe and Michael Roberts each plate two runners with doubles. Roberts scored on an error and Thompson scored on yet another passed ball.
After Seneca scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs put the game out of reach with six in the seventh. Enloe had his second 2-RBI double of the game. Spenser Witt drove in a run with a double. Kellen Bounous socked a two-run homer. Thompson ended the carnage with an RBI double.
Kyle Coatney was the winning pitcher. He fanned 10 Indians and allowed just three hits.
Monett also won the B-game, 11-0. Carlin Bailey was the winning pitcher.
Monett is scheduled to wrap up its Big 8 season today at East Newton.
