The Barry County Health Department will celebrate National Healthy Women's Week with a special luncheon on Monday, May 11. The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Lai Lai's restaurant and is open to all area women.
During the lunch, attendees will learn about current women's health issues and women's program changes in Missouri. In addition, women will receive information about resources for women's health care available in Barry and Lawrence counties.
"I would like to use this luncheon as the beginning of a women's network . . . women empowering women," said Leesa Ginther, health educator with the local health department. "What I find is a lot of people don't know what's available, and we offer so many programs here at the health department."
The Healthy Women's luncheon is free, but space is limited. Those planning to attend are asked to call the health department at 354-8686 by May 6 to reserve a seat.
In addition to hosting the luncheon, the health department, which is located on Highway 37, will offer a series of reduced price tests during the week of May 11 through May 14.
The following tests will be available: cholesterol and blood glucose, $5 each; total lipid panel, including cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides, $16; free nutrition counseling; and free resources for smoking cessation programs
The resources, lab tests and nutrition counseling are also offered at the health department's Cassville office on Main Street. The Monett office is open from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Cassville office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
