Breaking the game open in the fourth inning, the Monett Cubs defeated the Aurora Houn' Dawgs, 11-5, yesterday in a Big 8 Conference baseball game at Aurora.
Monett improved its overall record to 9-4 and went to 3-2 in the league.
In the top of the first inning, the Cubs took a 2-0 lead. Michael Roberts singled and scored on an RBI triple by Kellen Bounous. Kirk Moore's ground out scored Bounous.
Aurora tied the game in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs but then came the top of the fourth.
With two outs Monett did all its damage. Kyle Meyer walked, Spenser Witt singled and Roberts walked. An error by the Aurora shortstop on a grounder by Bounous allowed two runs to score. Moore walked to re-load the bases and Preston Thompson cleared the bases with a double.
Monett increased the lead to 11-2 the next inning. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Roberts also walked to force in Jake Smith. A wild pitch plated Meyer. On the same play a throwing error enabled Witt to score. Roberts then tried to move from first to third and he then continued home on another throwing error.
Kyle Coatney was the winning pitcher. He gave up four hits and struck out nine.
Monett's junior varsity also won, 3-2. Matt Schiffner was the winning hurler.
