Kirk Moore blasted a three-run walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday much to the delight of the home town fans to lift the Monett Cubs to a thrilling 14-12 Big 8 Conference baseball triumph over the visiting Carl Junction Bulldogs.
Monett evened its league mark at 2-2 and went to 5-4 on the season.
Rocked by a five-run Bulldog rally in the top of the sixth inning to snap a 7-7 tie, the Cubs came back to win it. Monett got a run back in the bottom on the sixth on an RBI single by Moore. Then, with Carl Junction leading 12-8, the Cubs ended the battle in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the last inning.
Kyle Coatney led off the last inning with a single, and Kyle Meyer walked. A throwing error enabled Coatney to score. Spenser Witt slapped an RBI single to make the score 12-10 in favor of the visitors. With one out, Kellen Bounous drove in a run with a single, sending Witt to third and setting up the game-winning homer over the left center field wall by Moore.
Moore finished the day with four RBIs. Bounous and Preston Thompson each had three runs batted in.
The Cubs out-hit Carl Junction 18-15 and improved their defense, committing just one error to two by Carl Junction.
Marcus McCaffrey was the winning pitcher in relief.
Monett also won the junior varsity game, 4-3. Colten Phillips was the winning pitcher in that game.
