Pounding out 14 hits, the Monett Cubs bashed the Lamar Tigers yesterday 15-7 in a Big 8 Conference baseball game at Monett North Park.
Monett improved to 4-2 on the season and evened its league record at 1-1.
Lamar took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a single, passed ball and an error, but the Cubs countered with four in the bottom half of the frame.
Marcus Enloe got it started with a one-out walk. Kyle Coatney also walked. With two outs, Kyle Meyer drove in a run with a single, Spenser Witt plated two runs with a single, and Michael Roberts hit an RBI triple.
The Tigers closed the gap to 4-3 in the third inning, but Monett got one of those runs back in the fourth when Colten Phillips stole home while Witt was stealing second.
In the fifth, the Cubs put some distance between them and Lamar with a big six-run inning. Kellen Bounous walked, and Enloe was hit by a pitch. Coatney had an RBI single. Enloe scored on a throwing error. Phillips had an RBI single, Witt drove in a pair with a double, and Roberts plated a run with a single.
After Lamar scored three runs in the sixth, Monett came back with four. With two outs, Meyer drove in a run with a single, and Roberts had a bases-loaded triple.
Kirk Moore was the winning pitcher, going the distance. He struck out five and allowed just five hits. Of the seven runs allowed, only two were earned as Monett committed seven errors in the game.
Monett also won the junior varsity contest, 8-0. Ethan Frazier was the winning hurler.
The Cubs are next in action today at home versus McDonald County in a non-league contest.
