Monett Falls To Mt. Vernon In Big 8 Baseball Game

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Going ahead to stay in the fourth inning, the host Mt. Vernon Mountaineers downed the Monett Cubs 8-4 yesterday in a Big 8 Conference baseball game.

Monett dropped to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in the league.

The Cubs grabbed a quick lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Spenser Witt singled to start the game and stole second. Marcus Enloe walked. With two outs, Witt and Enloe stole second and third and Preston Thompson followed with a two-RBI single.

Mt. Vernon got a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the third for a 3-2 lead.

The Cubs regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Kellen Bounous doubled and scored on a single by Jake Smith. Michael Roberts laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Smith to second. Smith then scored on a throwing error on a bounder to third by Kyle Coatney.

Once again Mt. Vernon came back, however, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning and adding three insurance runs in the fifth.

Errors hurt the Cubs in the game with five miscues committed.

Coatney was the losing hurler. He went the distance, allowing 10 hits and fanning nine.

Monett is next in action today at home versus Lamar in a Big 8 encounter.
