Giving up nine unearned runs, the Monett Cubs baseball team was defeated by the Carthage Tigers 10-6 yesterday in the Carthage Tournament.
Monett dropped to two wins against one loss on the season.
Despite out-hitting the host Tigers 11-8, Monett committed five errors that ultimately proved to be the deciding factor.
The Cubs took an early lead, scoring twice in the third inning. With one out, Kyle Meyer walked and stole second. Spenser Witt drove Meyer in with a single. Witt stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Witt then stole home.
Carthage took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs. The Cubs narrowed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth on an RBI double by Witt.
After the Tigers scored a run in the fifth to tie the game, Monett got three runs in the sixth to regain the lead. Witt, who had four RBIs in the game, drove in two with a single and then scored on an error.
Carthage countered with five runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Kyle Coatney started on the mound for Monett, striking out seven. Jesse Bremer took the loss in relief.
Monett is next slated to be in action in the tourney tomorrow versus Seneca.
