Jean Berg, director of the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library, has clarified two areas of the monthly board of trustees March meeting news story in The Monett Times on March 23.
Enhanced Enterprise Zone
"The Enhanced Enterprise Zone is for the city of Mt. Vernon," Berg stated. "The 50 percent tax abatement they will be suggesting is for Lawrence County taxes and is not just for the Mt. Vernon Branch, as is indicated in the Times article. John Rice, Mt. Vernon City administrator, requested that I serve on the Enterprise Committee to represent Lawrence County political subdivisions. The Library Board did not explore an enterprise zone for anything. I simply asked the board if there were any objections to my serving on the committee.
"The enterprise zone that the city of Mt. Vernon is attempting to establish is very similar to the southern Lawrence County Enhanced Enterprise Zone that has been developed by the Aurora Director of Economic Development, Noelle Harmon."
"The bid for replacement of carpeting is for the Mt. Vernon Branch and not Monett as indicated in the Times article," Berg said. "J & J Floorcovering, located in Monett, submitted the only bid for replacement of carpeting and tile at the Mt. Vernon Branch Library. The library board approved closing the Mt. Vernon Branch, not the Monett Branch, on April 4 for installation of the replacement carpeting and floor tile."
