Preston Thompson's solo home run leading off the sixth inning would prove to be the only run Monett would need as the Cubs defeated Springfield Catholic 3-0 yesterday at Monett North Park in a non-conference baseball game.
Monett improved to two wins against no losses on the young season.
Right-hander Kyle Coatney upped his record to 2-0 with a sparkling one-hitter. He struck out six and walked just one.
The Cubs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Kirk Moore drew a walk, Thompson doubled and Kellen Bounous was issued a free pass. Jake Smith followed with a two-RBI double.
The Cubs lost the junior varsity game, 8-1.
Monett will next be in action Thursday in another non-league contest at Crane.
