Strong pitching and timely hitting were the keys to the opening season victory by the Purdy Eagles baseball team Monday night in the Lamar Tournament.
Purdy led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Eagles then got breathing room by scoring three runs and went on to take the game against Liberal, 5-2.
Mason Roller pitched six innings, allowing one earned run and fanned six. He also had an RBI single.
Trent Goetz pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run. Goetz also had a hit in the contest.
Chris Bennett and Landon Terry also had singles for Purdy.
"Our pitching and defense was spectacular," commented Purdy Coach Joshua Hughes. "We hope to pick it up offensively Thursday against East Newton in this tournament."
