Erupting for six runs in the first inning, the Monett Cubs went on to trounce Springfield Parkview yesterday, 16-1, in Monett's season-opening baseball game of the season at Monett South Park. Meanwhile, Pierce City also won its first game but by a much closer score.
The Cubs pounded out 13 hits in the 10-run-rule, five-inning game.
After Parkview scored a run in the top of the first, the Cubs countered with six in the bottom of the frame.
Spenser Witt led off for Monett with a triple, and Kyle Coatney and Preston Thompson walked. With two outs, Kellen Bounous singled in a run, Jake Smith had a two-RBI single, Michael Roberts plated a run with a single, and Kyle Meyer finished the scoring with a two-RBI double.
Preston Thompson drove in a run in the second inning with a fielder's choice.
Monett tallied six more runs in the third inning to put the game completely out of reach.
Jake Smith and Michael Roberts scored on a throwing error in the third. Witt had a two-RBI double, Coatney drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Kirk Moore belted a two-run homer.
Coatney was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and allowing just seven hits.
In the junior varsity game, the Monett jayvees lost to Parkview, 3-1. Ethan Frazier was the losing hurler. Andy Hagedorn had the only RBI for the B-Cubs.
Monett is next slated to be in action today at home versus McDonald County.
In the Sarcoxie Tournament, the Pierce City Eagles upended Lockwood, 6-4.
Pierce City scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning for the winning margin.
Jared Barchak was the winning pitcher for the Eagles, striking out 15. Mitchell Gibson got the save.
Aaron Adams had a double for Pierce City.
