Purdy, Pierce City, Verona Boys Win District Cage Games

District high school basketball games continued in earnest last night with boys teams from Purdy, Verona and Pierce City staying alive.

Class 2A District 10

In the Class 2A District 10 event at Purdy, the host Eagles managed a 20-12 first quarter lead and stayed ahead all the way in defeating Wheaton, 72-55.

Wheaton had narrowed the Eagle's lead to five, 47-42, after three quarters, but Purdy found the range again in the final stanza to out-point Wheaton 25-13 and pull away for the victory.

Balanced scoring was a key for Purdy's quintet. Mason Roller and Blake Williams each tallied 16 points. Also in double figures were Kevin Terry with 13 points, and Trent Goetz and Trenton Patton with 10 points each.

Donovan Bartkoski paced Wheaton's attack with 19 points.

Purdy will now face Marionville at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in one of the semifinal games as a result of Marionville's 63-51 triumph over Greenfield last night.

Marionville grabbed a 29-21 lead by intermission and the Comets were never seriously challenged.

Brandon Verfurth was the spark for Marionville with 27 points. Jason Anderson tossed in 18 points for Greenfield.

The other semifinal game tomorrow will pit Jasper against Miller at 6 p.m.

Jasper advanced last night with a 69-66 win over Joplin McAuley. Jasper led 35-28 at the half but had to withstand a McAuley push in the second half to hang on for the win.

Isaac Tidball was the scoring force for Jasper with 35 points. Kevin O'Keefe tallied 24 points for McAuley.

Miller, ahead just 6-5 over College Heights after the opening period, completely shut down College Heights in the second quarter, outscoring that team 20-0, for a 26-5 halftime lead enroute to the win.

Justin Jack led Miller's scoring effort with 22 points. Evan Belk had 9 points for College Heights.

Class 1A District 6

In the boys Class 1A District 6 site at Aurora, Verona came back from a 24-25 deficit at intermission to nip Hurley, 44-42.

Tyler May and Charlie Withnell each had 13 points for Verona. Bryceton Burk tallied 21 points for Hurley.

Also in that tourney, Exeter was eliminated by Everton, 55-71. Exeter was outscored 29-46 in the second half.

Keith Hayworth led Exeter's scoring attack with 18 points. Garrett Gladden had 26 points and Chase Knackstedt 20 points for Everton.

Class 3A District 12

In the Class 3A District 12 event at Granby, Pierce City's advanced to the semifinals on Friday with an 87-69 triumph over Lamar. Pierce City led 45-37 at the half.

Dietrick Sooter poured in 36 points for Pierce City. Also in twin figures were Jared Fly with 14 points, Robert Baldwin with 12 points and Jared Barchak with 11 points.

Pierce City will face Ash Grove, 55-52 winners over Mt. Vernon, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The other semifinal Friday will see Seneca against East Newton at 6 p.m. Seneca downed Diamond 65-27, and East Newton ousted Southwest 62-53 last night.

Riley Brown had 22 points for East Newton. Levi Roberts led Southwest in scoring with 20 points.
