MHS Lady Cubs Prepare To Defend League Track Title

With 20 returning lettermen the Monett Lady Cubs tracksters are in a good position to defend their Big 8 Conference championship of 2008 as this year's season inches closer.

Head Coach Alan Spencer of the Lady Cubs commented: "We have a solid team returning with good senior leadership. With that ingredient and a great tradition in women's track, we feel we will be competitive in track and field."

Spencer noted there are 37 girls out for track this spring. There are six seniors, six juniors, 12 sophomores and 13 freshmen.

Returning senior lettermen are Anastasia Alexander, Denae Beckett, Erin Daugherty, Bianca Holloway, Leah Fellwock and Lena Pomeran.

Returning junior lettermen are Tiffany Carver, Keli Cornell, Whitney Dahlstrom and Sara Hammond.

Returning sophomore lettermen are Madison Carlin, Kaci Edgar, Desirae Fowler, Jennifer Frazier, Teresa Mangler, Hanna Martin, Amanda McKinney, Carrie Robbins, Lauren Sebastian and Amy Spooner.

Newcomers this season are juniors Millie Fulton and Liz Sutton, sophomores Kikayla Bennett, Katie Upchurch and Kayla Wormington, and freshmen Holly Abramovitz, Nicollette Fellwock, Sophie Fulton, Chelsey Jones, Elise Meyer, Gabrielle Phillips, Bronte Porter, Chloe Ridgley, Jessica Schmidt, Darian Shields, Jordan VanLue and Jerica Wiseman.

Last season Alexander was sectional qualifier in the 1,600 meter relay and state qualifier in the 400, Daugherty was Big 8 champion in the high jump, Fellwock was a sectional qualifier in the 1,600 meter relay, Carver was Big 8 champion in the 100 and sectional qualifier in the long jump, Hammond was a sectional qualifier in the 1,600 meter relay and Carlin was a sectional qualifier in the 1,600 meter relay.

Spencer will be assisted in his coaching duties by Jerry Hudson, Josh Honey, Andy Lemons and Melanie Mayberry.

Monett will open the season on Tuesday, March 24 in the Neosho warm-up.

The remaining schedule is as follows:

March 26 at McDonald County; March 31 at Reeds Spring; April 2 at Carthage; April 6 at Webb City; April 8 at Glendale; April 16 at East Newton; April 20 at Carl Junction; April 23 at Lamar; April 30 at Monett; May 5 at Big 8 Conference meet; May 16 district meet; May 23 sectional meet; and May 29-30 state meet.
