SEVENTY YEARS AGO

March 6, 1939

Bill Buchanan, area supervisor of WPA recreation work, spent Monday in Joplin attending the athletic institute in the interest of amateur baseball, tennis, and other activities.

New 1939 Buicks are $894 at the Hildreth Motor Company, located in Monett and Aurora, it has been reported.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

March 6, 1949

Four men using power pruning equipment are moving through the Gardner Orchards south of Monett at a speed never before attained by a crew of 12 men employing the old style hand pruners and shears.

Monett fans will get an opportunity Wednesday night to see Howard Heinen, star basketball player at Verona High School, in action on the National Guard Armory court here.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

March 6, 1959

Osa Manes, who has served as assistant fire chief in Monett for seven years, has been announced the new chief by the Monett City Council, succeeding Henry Planchon, who has resigned.

Phil Mulkey, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Mulkey of Route 2, Purdy, has been selected as one of five Distinguished Military Cadets at Memphis State University in Tennessee.

Fourth annual Future Business Leaders of America talent show last night at the Monett High School Auditorium has been termed a tremendous success.

Fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the American Legion will be observed at a special dinner March 15 at the Legion Home in Monett.

March 6, 1979

Twenty-seven road projects covering 206.15 miles have been approved by the Barry County Court for funding, according to Howard Bounous, county clerk.

Plans for replacement of the United States flag which was stolen from the flag pole in front of the American Legion Home in Monett were approved by Legionnaires at last night's meeting.

Dr. Steve Stidham, a Monett dentist, has been elected president of the Monett Chamber of Commerce.

Kirk Carlin of Pierce City has been installed as chairman of the Eastern Star Training Award for Religious Leaders Committee of General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

TEN YEARS AGO

March 6, 1999

Key figures in the Republican party used the annual Lincoln Day celebration in Lawrence County, held in Freistatt, as a warm-up to the 2000 election.

The Verona girls basketball team were eliminated in the first round of state play last night by Greenwood, 52-55, and finished the season with a fine 24-4 record.
