SEVENTY YEARS AGO

March 9, 1939

Monett Fire Department made a run Wednesday to the taxi service office in the Boss Building on South Fourth Street where a coal oil stove was on fire and caused some damage.

Fresh pork shanks are 13 cents a pound at Davis Brothers Grocery in Monett, it has been advertised by the store.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

March 9, 1949

More seats for spectators will be available at the Jaycee Athletic Field in Monett this fall with 250 to 300 more seats on the east side of the field to be installed.

Work will start within the next week on a two-story addition to the Vaisey-Bristol Shoe Corporation building in Monett.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

March 9, 1959

Local contractor M. E. Gillioz was honored by over 75 people yesterday at Hatcher's in Monett on the occasion of his 82nd birthday.

Winning first place trophies in the annual Neosho Speech and Debate Tournament from Monett were June Lynn Skaggs, David Fly, Ann Meuser, and Eddie Sweeney.

FORTY YEARS AGO

March 9, 1969

Plans for a Ladies Night at the Monett Park Casino in April were approved by the Monett Kiwanis Club at a meeting yesterday with David Sippy, president, presiding.

Victor Cox, formerly of Monett, has been elected president of the Byron J. Hart Memorial reunion class of the Valley of Joplin, Scottish Rite.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

March 9, 1979

The U. S. Department of Labor is holding checks totaling $2,705 for 39 employees in the Monett and Aurora area, whose former employers have agreed to make up deficiencies in minimum wage or overtime payments.

Swinging Country, a four-piece group of musical entertainers from the Monett and Pierce City area, took a first place trophy in competition in Springfield on Saturday.

Laura Traynor, a 1986 graduate of Monett High School, has been accepted at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Tammy Burnett and Doug Carr, graduates of Monett High School, have been installed as members of Phi Eta Sigma at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin.

Gene Mulvaney, emergency preparedness coordinator for Monett, announced yesterday 25th annual tornado drill in Monett went very well.

Burl Fowler, former Monett Cubs football and wrestling coach, has been honored posthumously by being inducted into the Missouri Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
