Collette Arend, age 53 of Joplin passed away at her home at 11:09 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009.
Born November 21, 1955 in Monett, MO, she was the daughter of the late Coley and Ruth White Arend. A 1974 graduate of Monett High School, she received her degree from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg. A certified speech therapist, she was a special education teacher for Carthage R-9 School District the past ten years. She helped found the Reading 180 Program in Carthage and was a member of the Missouri State Teachers' Association. Her passion was working tirelessly for kids who had disabilities. She touched many children's lives. She was also an animal rescue advocate, working to find good homes for pets.
Survivors include her son, Dustin Edge and his fiancée Carissa of Springfield, MO; her brother, Greg Arend and his wife Linda of Vienna, VA; her sister, Connie Claybough and husband Ron of Springfield, MO; a niece, Lacey Arend and a nephew, Chris Claybough.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, February 20 at Fairview Christian Church, 2320 S. Grand in Carthage with Chris Hulette, minister officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Carthage R-9 School District Foundation designated for the Reading 180 Program or to C.A.R.E. (Castaway Animal Rescue Effort) in Springfield, in care of Parker Mortuary.
