Eagles’ upset bid falls short

MARIONVILLE – It was not the result Pierce City had hoped for, falling 34-0 to Marionville in the Class 1, District 4 semifinal on Friday. Pierce City (8-3) came into the game looking to avenge a regular-season loss to the Comets and left no stone unturned — or in this case, no play uncalled, in the contest.
Signaling early in the contest that they were serious, the Eagles gambled on a fourth-and-9 and completed a pass to Payton Moennig for 15 yards and a first down.
The Eagles took the opening drive of the game to the Comets’ 9-yard line, but fumbled on second-and-goal.
Marionville methodically drove to the Pierce City 9-yard line before the Eagles’ defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs, thanks to a Payton VanNote sack on fourth down.
Unable to earn a first down, Pierce City sent the punt team on the field, only to have the attempt partially blocked.
Marionville took over at the Eagles’ 11, and three plays later, Marionville’s Dakota Wilson found paydirt from four yards out. ...
