United Fund begins annual campaign

The Barry-Lawrence Area United Fund has started its annual fund drive to raise money to support children and youth programs in the two-county area. Since 1966, when it replaced United Way, the United Fund has supported programs that offer expanded opportunities for young people. Kiwanians hear of ancestor who helped open the West

Monett Kiwanians heard the story of Marcus Whitman, an ancestor of Monett dentist Dr. David Honeycutt, who helped open the Oregon Trail during a recent meeting. According to Honeycutt, Whitman was born in Federal Hollow, N.Y. in 1802 and raised by an uncle in Plainfield, Mass. At age 17, Whitman became interested through religious revivals in becoming a minister. His family could not support the needed college training, so Whitman studied the tanning and shoe business...
