Vocal music instructor earns Teacher of the Month award (10/10/12)
Lauren Lee is a third generation teacher who followed the model of her mother and grandparents and eventually became a vocal music instructor. In September, Lee, who teaches vocal music to Purdy high school and middle school students, was honored as the first Teacher of the Month for the 2012-13 school year. The teacher recognition program, sponsored by EFCO, a Pella Company, and The Monett Times, is beginning its fourth year, and Lee was recognized during a special ceremony on Oct. 4...

Apple Butter Makin' Days this weekend (10/10/12)
One of the biggest outdoor festivals in southwest Missouri, Mt. Vernon's Apple Butter Makin' Days, will be held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 12 to 14, in the square in Mt. Vernon. Job fair continues help at Hydro (10/10/12)
Help is continuing for the Hydro Aluminum employees who face losing their jobs when the extrusion division closes. Pre-school students at St. Mary's Catholic School learned some valuable lessons about fire safety as a preview to Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 7 through Oct. 13. Firefighters from Pierce City Rural Fire Department presented information on fire alarms, how to escape a burning house and having a family emergency plan in place. The Haven of the Ozarks' pet of the week is Ruckus. He is a local dog looking for a home of his own. Ruckus is a 9-month-old Shepherd mix that loves long walks and snuggling on the couch. Animals available for adoption at the animal sanctuary are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations. Animals must be returned to Haven of the Ozarks if placement is not successful. LCSO receives marijuana eradication grant (10/10/12)
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office has received grant money to conduct a statewide marijuana eradication program. In previous years the Missouri Sheriff's Association (MSA) has applied for the grant and dispersed monies to participating agencies. "Due to policy changes, MSA is no longer eligible for funds so the program was essentially dead," said Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay.
