Hydro Aluminum to cut 140 jobs in Monett (08/01/12)
In the biggest industrial cutback in jobs to hit Monett in a dozen years, Hydro Aluminum has announced the closing of its aluminum extrusion operation in Monett. Employees received the news from management on Wednesday morning. At stake is 140 jobs. Shutdown of the extrusion division will take place on or about Oct. 15. For the first time in nearly 20 years, Monett will have a new postmaster on Aug. 1. Mike Williams, who started his duties in February 1993, retired on July 31. His successor is Mary Hopkins. Verona School Board reviews school preparations (08/01/12)
A funding squeeze is anticipated for the coming year at the Verona R-7 School District. Superintendent William Sweet reported higher savings that may be needed to offset lower revenue. Assessed valuation in the district dropped by $2.5 million, Sweet said, due to a local company that changed owners, prompting a one-year spike in personal property taxes. Local property tax collections were also below average, with only 77 percent of taxpayers meeting their obligations...

Continued concern about teens congregating downtown in the evening was voiced during the July regular meeting of the Monett City Council. A business employee whose establishment remains open late said teens have again been gathering at Fourth and Broadway. Two involved in non-injury crash (08/01/12)
A two-car crash on Monday resulted in no visible injuries to either driver. The crash occurred at 10 a.m. on Highway 37 about one-half mile west of Cassville.
