Pierce City water update (03/29/12)
Conditions appear to have returned to normal in Pierce City following a water supply incident on Tuesday. Blown fuses on the city's south well shut down pumping. The problem was not discovered until the supply in both water towers dropped below pressure levels recommended by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources...
Purdy R-2 board rehires teachers (03/29/12)
The Purdy R-2 Board of Education voted to rehire all its teachers for next school year during the March board meeting. Nineteen certified teachers who are provisionally employed received contracts to return for another year. Sarah Garbee, a middle school communication arts instructor, and Lance Yarbro, a high school math teacher, were moved from provisional to tenured status...
Kiwanians hear about Fire Explorers program (03/29/12)
The Monett Kiwanis Club heard details about the Explorers program at the Monett Fire Department during a recent club meeting. Shane Anderson, training officer with the fire department and supervisor for the Explorers Post, said the Monett City Council authorized creation of the Explorers in 2009. The post currently has 14 active members and is one of the largest of the 10 fire explorers organizations in southwest Missouri. The largest state organization is in St. Louis...

The Barry County Health Department Board of Trustees received an update on WIC (Women, Infant, Child) program funding at its regularly scheduled meeting on March 15. Roger Brock, health department administrator, reported that the agency's first quarter WIC participation numbers decreased by 588. The drop in numbers will result in a $7,644 decrease in WIC funding for the 2011-12 contract year, which ends Sept. 30...
R-1 ELL program makes gains (03/29/12)
Great strides in the English language learners (ELL) program in the Monett R-1 School District were reported at the Monett Board of Education meeting in March. Daphne Hensley, R-1 district ELL coordinator, and Brad Hanson, assistant superintendent, reported statewide results from standardized tests given last spring. Of the 75 districts with a large enough ELL population to test separately, only five met all the requirements under Title 3 assessment procedures...
