Crimes against children are on the rise (12/15/11)
Child sexual assault crimes have reached an unprecedented high in the bi-county area according to law enforcement officials in attendance at the December meeting of the Barry-Lawrence Chapter of Crime Stoppers. Lawrence County Sherriff Brad DeLay and Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly both indicated that child sex crimes have increased at a greater rate than other types of crimes in both counties...
Deputy salary increases will be short lived (12/15/11)
The Barry County Sheriff's Department is awaiting dispersements from the Deputy Sheriff Supplemental Salary Fund, which will increase county officers' salary to $28,000 per year, but the increase will likely be short lived. "We filed for this funding around five years ago, and it has been held up in court for that long," said Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly. "The idea behind the funding is that many deputy sheriffs' salaries are around $22,000 in the state of Missouri, and that is way too low...

Purdy man dies in hit and run (12/15/11)
A Purdy man is dead following a hit and run accident last night on Business 37 north of Cassville. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Tommy G. Rickman, 44, of Purdy, was walking in the roadway on Business 37 one and half miles north of Cassville at 7:30 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle, which left the scene. Rickman was pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital at 8:17 p.m...
