Bridge to be closed Monday (09/16/11)

The Pride of Pierce City Committee has scheduled a community-wide clean-up day for the city starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Pierce City's South Park. Requests for local charitable help from residents facing difficulties have increased in recent weeks. Clergy have reported more people seeking aid. Lori Balmas, director of the Monett Senior Citizens Center, said periodically seniors will approach the center with utility funding problems. Richard (Dick) Langstraat lost his battle to lung disease on Sept. 10, 2011. He died peacefully, his family by his side, at their lake home in Missouri. Dick was born on Feb. 13, 1939 near Pella, Iowa. At age 18 he enlisted in the U. S. Army. He often said that he didn't think he would miss the hard work of the family farm, but after basic training, he asked himself why he ever left Iowa. ...
