Fatal crash closes down Highway 37 (07/15/11)
A head-on crash that left one Barry County man dead closed down a portion of Highway 37 between Monett and Purdy this morning. Billy J. Walker, 37, of Exeter, was killed when the 2000 Ford F150 pickup he was driving crossed the centerline and struck a Tyson tractor-trailer head on. Danny P. Beck, 61, of Jay, Okla., who was operating the Tyson truck, was not injured in the crash, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report...
Pierce City swimming pool now open (07/15/11)
It's a relief for Pierce City sunbathers and water babies to finally have the Pierce City Municipal Pool open for use. Repairs delayed the pool's opening until the July 4th weekend, but area residents are now able to beat the heat of summer with cooling water sports and activities...
Monett kennel is shut down (07/15/11)
The Humane Society of Missouri, in conjunction with the Missouri Attorney General's Office and the Missouri Department of Agriculture, removed 73 adult dogs and puppies from a breeding facility in Monett. The dogs were removed from Moser Kennel, owned and operated by Linda Brisco. Breeds included Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, American Eskimos, Poodles, Beagles, Papillons and Brussels Griffons. All have been taken to St. Louis for veterinary examinations and treatment...
Human trafficking is subject of next week's Kiwanis meeting (07/15/11)

Kiwanians hear from scholarship winner (07/15/11)
William Medlin, a 2007 Monett High School graduate, spoke at his week's meeting of the Monett Kiwanis Club. Medlin, who was introduced by his father, Bill Medlin Jr., recently completed four years of study at Missouri State University. His scholarship from the club provided $1,000 a year for four years. Medlin earned a degree in education and physical ed. He is qualified to teach kindergarten through 12th grade...

Low E. coli counts recorded at streams (07/15/11)
The Lawrence County Health Department is monitoring several streams within the county. Results indicate some areas have higher E. coli counts than EPA-recommended limits. E. coli is a fecal coliform bacteria that lives in all human and animal intestines. At present, there is no federal or state standards for E. coli densities in recreational waters. EPA's proposed standards for bacteria densities should not exceed 235 E. coli per 100 milliliters of fresh water for full body contact...
