Insurance agent among those hit by tornado (07/13/11)
Monettan Jerry Sitton has been a State Farm insurance agent in Joplin for many years. Sitton's office was located at 1921 E. 20th St., the way he liked it. His biggest challenge was finding things on his perpetually messy desk. On May 22, Sitton was in Camdenton, playing golf with old friends from his days at Southwest Missouri State University. Storms chased them off the golf course, and then Sitton's cell phone brought him news that Joplin had been hit by a tornado...
Seeking sidewalk scribblers (07/13/11)
The second annual Chalk Walk on Broadway will be held on Friday, Aug. 12. The event is sponsored by the Monett Chamber of Commerce. The Chalk Walk will consist of teams and individuals in two age groups, 15 and older, and 14 and under. Adult supervision is required for contestants under the age of 15 until the project is completed...
Summer weather is heating up this week (07/13/11)
It's hot. Temperatures have been near 100 all week, renewing concerns about safety. According to Bonnie Witt-Schulte, Monett's emergency management director, no requests have come to the city for a cooling center so far. Should the need arise, Witt-Schulte said the shelter at the air-conditioned Monett Justice Center could be made available...
Making progress on Pierce City bridge (07/13/11)
Heavy equipment has moved in this week and removed the floor of the Highway 97 bridge over Clear Creek. Part of the Safe and Sound Bridge Replacement program, the new bridge will look much like the new bridge on Business Highway 60 going into Verona. The bridge will have two 12-foot lanes, wider than the current structure built in 1935, and have concrete barriers on either side...
Stones Prairie picnic offers old-fashioned fun (07/13/11)
A number of popular attractions are expected to return for the annual picnic at St. John's Lutheran Church atStones Prairie on Friday, July 15. The popular show of antique farm equipment and vehicles is still open to entries. Mark McMillin, one of the picnic's organizers, said the owner of a 1925 Model T one-ton truck had agreed to bring it this year. McMillin hopes to bring back the parade of antique vehicles that was done for the first time last year...
Area crash claims life of Pierce City man (07/13/11)
A Pierce City man died in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 86 two mile east of Golden early Tuesday morning. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Travis G. Barnes, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene by Barry County Deputy Coroner Charlie McManus at 12:20 a.m. after Barnes's 2006 Dodge pickup ran off the roadway and struck a tree...
Blood drive attracted 41 donors (07/13/11)
Forty-one people donated blood at the June American Red Cross blood drive held at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett. Donna Beckett, bloodmobile chairman, noted four-gallon marks were reached. Among those receiving gallon pins were: Kristine Johnson and Mary Mechele Tharp, one gallon; Randy Kristek and Judy Kitchen, two gallons; Kristine Shanks, three gallons; and Gorden Renfro, 14 gallons. Evening house fire (07/13/11)
Monett firefighters responded to a grease fire at 350 N. Belaire in Monett shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Fans were brought in to ventilate the home, recently purchased by Marcus and Kylie Campbell.
Hangar lease is renewed (07/13/11)
The Monett City Council has renewed a lease agreement with Golden Aviation for the airplane hangar built on the east-west taxiway at the Monett Municipal Airport. Terms of the lease call for annual rent of $600. The lease covers a five-year period and can be renewed for an additional five years. Golden Aviation is obligated to maintain property liability insurance of at least $500,000 and at least $1 million insurance for personal injury or death...
Barry County woman perishes in house fire (07/13/11)
On July 9, an early morning fire claimed the life of 71-year-old Barbara Hobbs, of Exeter. The Exeter Fire Protection District responded to the fire at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Around a half dozen volunteer firefighters battled the blaze with four fire apparatus vehicles for nearly five hours before containing the fire and clearing the scene at 10:08 a.m...
