Sales tax holiday and sidewalk sale entice shoppers (08/05/10)
Monett is again participating in a big way with Missouri's annual "Back to School" Sales Tax Holiday, slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. By state law, the sales ax holiday begins on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday. Pizza Hut in Monett to begin rebuilding soon (08/05/10)
Plans to rebuild the Pizza Hut in Monett are nearly complete. According to Patricia Hopkins with Hammon-Kurtz, the Lebanon-based owner of the local Pizza Hut franchise, the decisions needed to replace the building destroyed by a tornado on May 13 are almost completed. The main delay has been working with separate insurance adjusters for the equipment, the property and the building...
Monett man trains wild mustangs (08/05/10)
Three days "off the truck" and the horse's eyes were pools of melting chocolate, his breathing easy and the weight of his muzzle growing heavier in the hand as he closed his eyes and leaned in closer to have his neck rubbed. This "wild" mustang may not have been broken to the saddle, but he certainly failed to live up to the John Wayne stereotype of stampeding hooves stirring up clouds of dust as he fights to escape the wooden corral...
Verona City Council reviews sewer issues (08/05/10)
Verona City Council reviewed progress on the inspection of the city's sewer lines at its regular meeting held July 27. According to Ron Greenwood of the sewer department, the cleaning and televised inspection of the lines was a major step for the city. An estimated cost of $19,600 for proposed repairs to the city's system was provided by Ray Greek of Ace Pipe Cleaning...
Softball, cheerleading previews offered to Kiwanians (08/05/10)
Previews of the Monett High School softball and cheerleading programs were offered by the coaches for the Monett Kiwanis Club at this week's meeting. Ty Goetz, head softball coach and also the head boys baseball coach and the assistant basketball coach, said he expected a rebuilding season ahead for the Lady Cubs. Goetz has 18 on the squad at present and hopes to see as many as 24 when the season got underway...
Speedway results announced (08/05/10)
The Monett Speedway was busy on Sunday with a full complement of races. Nine racers competed in the Rookie division feature, requiring two preliminary heats. Lenny Coats commanded the field by winning both his heat and the feature. Clayton Powell bettered his third place preliminary feature to take second in the feature, dropping Jesse James to third after a second place heat. Frank James took fourth in both the preliminary and the feature. John Beard settled for fifth after winning his heat...

Leo Bennett, age 89, of Springfield, MO, formerly of Purdy, passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2010 at the Veterans Home in Mt Vernon, MO. He was born on June 4, 1921 in Purdy, MO to Loyd 'Pete' and Effie (Henderson) Bennett. He was united in marriage to Lela Laney on June 23, 1951 in Eureka Springs, Ark. She preceded him in death on May 29, 1995. He then married Anna Hall on Jan. 22, 2000 in Springfield, MO. She passed away on Feb. 8, 2002...
