Funding issues continue to top R-1 agenda (05/03/10)
The Monett R-1 Board of Education looked at school funding issues and plans for renovations at Monett Elementary School during the regular April board meeting. Superintendent Dr. John Jungmann provided an update on the latest developments on the state budget. Governor Jay Nixon had executed an additional withholding on budgeted funds for transportation and the Parents as Teachers program that totals $8 million statewide. For Monett, the reduction means a cut of between $20,000 and $25,000...
Survivors celebrated at dinner (05/03/10)
A dinner celebrating life and successes in the battle against cancer was held Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Monett as part of festivities leading up to the Relay for Life on Friday. The third annual survivors dinner attracted more than 100 for an evening of food and fun. Helen Ruscha, co-chairperson of the survivors committee with Emma Fae Ruscha, said the event is designed to be a special evening for both Relay for Life organizers and local families participating in the effort...
Cubs marching band meets its fundraising goal (05/03/10)
Thanks to a generous $10,000 donation from an anonymous donor, the Monett High School marching band has achieved its fundraising goal of $70,000. The money raised by the group will be used to finance the band's trip to Washington, D.C., to perform in the Memorial Day Parade, which will take place at the end of the month...

Edna Burtchett, age 87, of Aurora, died on Thursday, April 29, at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett. She was born to James and Martha Edwards Nunley on Sept. 8, 1922 in Rosebud, Ark. Edna was a member of the Eagles Club Ladies Auxiliary in Aurora since 1988 where she served in several officer positions through the years. She was the oldest member of the auxiliary and enjoyed participating in several of the club's community service programs such as providing food baskets for the needy...
