Purdy High School presented the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" on Nov. 23. Set in the early years of the Vietnam War, 'Bye Bye Birdie' sings the tale of Conrad Birdie, the era's biggest rock-and-roll star. When Birdie's draft number is called, his manager/songwriter, Albert Peterson, hatches a plot with Peterson's faithful secretary and longtime girlfriend, Rosie Alvarez, to capitalize on Birdie's draft and win fame and fortune for them all. The Ed Sullivan Show agrees to feature Birdie, as he bids a musical farewell to his legion of fans in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, and plants a kiss on one lucky girl, Kim MacAfee. Chaos ensues as Birdie and his entourage descend upon the tiny community, meeting resistance from parents, fanning jealous flames and causing a 1950's-style television uproar.
